The ACLU of Texas joined with an alliance of immigrant advocacy groups, private attorneys, and a law school clinic in filing legal complaints targeting abuses by CBP. Ten damages cases were filed alleging unlawful CBP conduct in northern and southern border states; six of the ten claims originated in Texas.

These cases illustrate an ongoing pattern of rampant misconduct against both immigrants and U.S. citizens on our nation’s borders. The coordinated filings received national media attention and were used by our colleagues in the ACLU’s Washington Legislative Office in negotiations with the “Gang of Eight” senators drafting comprehensive immigration reform legislation. Our case on behalf of U.S. citizen and border resident Laura Mireles asserts claims of excessive force and false arrest.
