All Texans — no matter our race, ethnicity, or background — deserve to have our civil rights and liberties respected. We know how difficult it can be when these rights are violated.
If you or someone you know believes your rights have been violated, the ACLU of Texas may be able to help.
Please read through the following information before filling out a legal assistance form.
IMPORTANT: If your concern is time sensitive, please consider reaching out to these resources.
Cases We Accept
The ACLU of Texas only considers cases addressing one or more of our six issue areas:
- Border and Immigrants’ Rights
- Free Speech
- LGBTQA+ Equality
- Reproductive Freedom
- Smart Justice
- Voting Rights
Cases We Do Not Accept
The ACLU of Texas does not generally accept these kinds of cases:
- Matters concerning private workplace grievances.
- Domestic matters (divorce, child custody, wills, etc.).
- Denial of benefits, such as workers’ compensation, unemployment benefits, or Social Security.
- Landlord / tenant disputes.
- Personal cases in immigration court or visa processing, including deportation proceedings and naturalizations.
- Criminal cases or complaints about a person’s attorney in a criminal case.
Timing and Capacity
The ACLU of Texas receives a large number of intakes on a daily basis. While we work hard to process them as quickly as possible, you may not hear from us for weeks.
We encourage you to contact other organizations like these if you need immediate legal assistance.
Currently, we are only able to take on less than 1% of the cases we receive through our intake system.
Even if your complaint falls within the above guidelines, completing our Legal Assistance Request Form does not guarantee that the ACLU of Texas will provide legal assistance.
