“We want our supporters to be the eyes and ears for the ACLU of Texas in their communities all over the state,” said Terri Burke, Executive Director.

The afternoon’s first training, “How to Develop an Effective Campaign Strategy,” will feature Nsombi Lambright, Executive Director with the ACLU of Mississippi, and Chandra Bhatnagar, Senior Staff Attorney with the national office of the ACLU.  Participants will also learn from longtime Austin-area community activist Debbie Russell; Grassroots Leadership Organizer Bob Libal; Messaging Audience and Presentation President James Aldrete; and ACLU of Texas Legal Director Lisa Graybill in the second workshop, “Organizing 101 and How to Conduct Public Education Events.”

“This conference fits in well with our new Community Action Network and our ‘road show’ events in communities across the state,” said Burke. “By training and working with local leaders in different communities, we will have a wider reach in our public education efforts, and ultimately, will be more effective guardians of the civil liberties of all Texans.”

The luncheon keynote speaker will be the Rev. William Lawson, well-known community leader in Houston. Renowned civil rights attorney Al Bronstein will also discuss “Ethical Issues When Your Client Is a Worthy Cause.” Attorneys will be eligible for one hour of ethics credit.
