Ayania Hicks joined the ACLU of Texas as an engagement associate in January 2025.
Ayania was introduced to community organizing as a reproductive justice intern at Power U: Center for Social Change in Miami, Florida. There, she witnessed the transformative power of youth-led organizing, political education, and civic engagement. Following her time at Power U, Ayania spent two years as a public school English teacher, where she saw firsthand the escalating challenges to public education and free speech. These experiences ignited her commitment to social justice.
Ayania is dedicated to using cultural organizing and education as tools to resist oppression and create a better world. Her work is centered around collective learning and action to drive change and resist oppression. She believes in the power of critical imagination to envision a more loving, abundant, and livable future for everyone.
Long walks, matcha, and trips to the bookstore bring her joy.
