HOUSTON — Today, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Texas submitted testimony to the Texas Senate Committee on Health and Human Services regarding three anti-abortion bills — SB 8, SB 258, and SB 415 — that, if passed, would threaten Texas women’s health, privacy and constitutional right to an abortion.
“These three bills violate the constitutional limits on Texas’ ability to regulate abortion, in much the same way the Supreme Court ruled against in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt last summer,” said Trisha Trigilio, staff attorney for the ACLU of Texas. “These laws would prevent doctors from using safe and proven medical procedures and pressure women into revealing personal information to anti-abortion groups. Politics have no place in the exam room to begin with, and we should be especially wary of laws with the potential to humiliate, expose and endanger Texas women.”
