Texans won’t abandon our values or each other

Today, we commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s unwavering struggle for freedom and justice in the face of overwhelming adversity. The Civil Rights Movement boldly challenged systemic racism and demanded dignity for Black Americans, workers, immigrants, and every person marginalized by a nation that has failed to live up to its promise of equality.

Today, we also witness the inauguration of a president who has openly pledged to roll back many of the hard-won freedoms that Dr. King and countless others worked to secure.

While Texas is a blueprint for these nationwide attacks on our most cherished rights, Texans won’t abandon our values or each other. We’ve come too far.

From the streets to the State Capitol, we’ll keep working for a state that works for all of us — where each of us can live free from discrimination, make personal decisions without government overreach, and build a good life for ourselves and our families. No exceptions.

The 89th Texas Legislature’s regular session is already underway. State politicians will soon debate new laws that could significantly change our everyday lives and be replicated across the country. By getting involved in the process, we have the power to demand that lawmakers listen to the people — not the billionaires lining their pockets.
